The Suffolk County SPCA (SCSPCA) is a humane society chartered by New
York State in 1984. Over the past seventeen years the agency provided
services to tens of thousands of feral animals, pets, and their owners.
The mission of the SCSPCA is to devote our full energy towards providing
humane services to the pets, animals and residents of the metropolitan
area.
The SCSPCA mobile medical unit is one of three units in the entire
country. At the request of the NYC Police Canine unit the SCSPCA
responded and arrived on site at 6 PM on Tuesday. The unit has been
operational 24 hours per days staffed with federal, NYC and Long Island
veterinarians and Vet techs.
The SCSPCA has over 20 volunteers working at the site and another 10
with office staff back up.
All monetary donations should be sent to the SCSPCA 363 Route 111
Smithtown, NY 11787 Volunteers are needed to help in the office. Please
call the SCSPCA office to volunteer your services at the Long Island
Office.
The SCSPCA is a volunteer agency consisting of over sixty non-paid
individuals from all walks of life. Our peace officers are both active
and retired law enforcement personnel who enforce the New York State
Agriculture and Market Law with regard to the prevention of mistreatment
and cruelty to animals. Our civilian humane workers and office
personnel are volunteers who work on non-criminal investigations as well
as delivering the support services (free rabies clinics, spay/neuter
programs/animal rescue) the SCSPCA provides for Suffolk County.
The agency currently, in addition to the 2100 plus cases we formally
investigated in 2000, provides thousands of free rabies inoculations,
conducts a spay/neuter clinic for feral cats, provides educational
programs, and supports senior citizens with pets. During the last five
years we responded to over 9,000 cases involving potential animal abuse
and neglect.
The SCSPCA offers free rabies clinics. These clinics are offered in the
Towns of Islip, Huntington and Smithtown. Each year, the SCSPCA
inoculates over 3,000 pets at these clinics. In addition to these
clinics the SCSPCA offers dogs a last chance for adoption through our
mobile unit.
The SCSPCA works cooperatively with North Shore Animal League in an
effort to contain the rapidly growing feral cat population through our
spay/neuter program. To date, the agency has prevented the birth of
over 1,000,000 feral cats. We are currently seeking community support
for the operation of a spay/neuter bus for Suffolk County.

PRESS RELEASE
Suffolk County SPCA to Rescue Pets of Missing Owners
Individuals who know that a pet belonging to a person missing at the WTC
is abandoned in an apartment may contact the Suffolk County SPCA at 631
382-SPCA. Individuals may leave their name, relationship to the missing
person and return phone number at the Suffolk County SPCA office.
Anyone who finds a distressed pet may bring the animal to the Suffolk
County SPCA emergency MASH unit located at West Street just north of
Chambers for immediate emergency treatment.
The SCSPCA since arriving at ground zero on Tuesday evening houses, at
its MASH unit, veterinary services at the inner perimeter of the World
Trade Center. As the lead animal support agency the Suffolk County SPCA
has stationed a MASH unit to treat the search and rescue dogs involved
in the rescue operation. Because the SCSPCA is the only humane agency
located near ground zero the SCSPCA is able to provide immediate support
for dogs and cats that need veterinary services.
